He and his new companion, Elder Westcott, are the zone leaders. It will be a great experience for him to train and lead a good size group of missionaries.
Pingtung is in southern Taiwan, just east of Kaohsiung. It is supposed to be the hottest area in Taiwan. The famous film director, Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) is a native of Pingtung.
Here are some of the photos of Adam while in Taibao.
His new companion is Elder Dotson from Enoch, Utah. According to Elder Dotson, Enoch is even more rural than Taibao so he is being eased into the mission that covers some really densely populated areas. Adam is also given the assignment to be the District Leader, with Min-Hsiung (Minxiong) as the other area in the District.
The Taibao Branch is pretty small, with about 20-30 people attending church each Sunday. There are a total of 7 young people (Primary children plus Young Men/Young Women). The branch president is 29 years old but, according to Adam, is a super cool person. Adam's apartment is only 3 minutes from the chapel so it is very convenient.
Adam loves this area (just like he loves all his former areas) because the people are so down to earth, really nice, and really hard working. His area includes the beach so it's a little farther from the mountains and the rain.
He is teaching some really good people and working with members who have been to church for a while. Now that he has a companion who is brand new in Taiwan, Adam has to take more responsibility in communicating in Chinese with the local people.
Here are some recent photos.
Taibao is a small city in a rural area that is very flat and famous for melons. It is named after the official rank of its most famous native son, Wang De-Lu, who was a high ranking official (a Taibao) in the Chinese emperor's court. It is also famous for a temple memorializing the water buffalo to remind the people in the area how hard the water buffalos worked to till the ground when the area was first settled several centuries ago. As shown on the map below, a few city blocks of buildings are surrounded by farmland. The LDS church is at the corner of an apartment block with a huge sign hanging on the side of the building.

Adam's first 2 weeks in Kang Shan had been good. He enjoys working with Elder Zavalla, who is wowing the local people with his language skills (fluent in Mandarin, English, and Spanish). Adam was pleasantly surprised to receive a care package from the Dalisay family, especially the Star Ward Yoda tie, which Adam is going to wear often.
He is only 20 minutes by train north of his previous area. His new companion is from New Mexico. Elder Zavalla speaks fluent English, Spanish, and Mandarin. Adam learned a lot from Elders Collette and Elder Clayson in Kao Hsiung and he looks forward to working with Elder Zavalla in the new area.
It started with a Skype video conference with family, followed by a zone conference with Pres. and Sis. Teh, and visits with many people.

Zone Conference on Dec 22, 2016

Highlights of the holiday include chance meetings with two UCLA students visiting Kao-Hisung. One is actually a fellow student that took a class with him last year. The other is an upperclassman who had relatives in Kao-Hsiung. He enjoyed the chance to tell them about his mission in Taiwan.

It might not have been a sound financial decision but Adam decided to become a Costco member in Taiwan. With the membership, he had access to the cheap pizza slices and even churros. He now has a favorite place to go on P-day.

He was pleasantly surprised to receive a package from his mom, filled with his favorite treats and lots of motherly love. He also loved the handwritten notes from church members back in San Francisco and a special package from the Durrants. He sends his love to everyone back home.
Just when he thought that all the surprises were done with, he met Vincent Lin from home. Vincent served his mission in the same area several years ago and was visiting Kao-Hsiung over the holidays.

Adam is poised to complete his language training by "passing off" the last module of Mandarin Chinese lessons this coming week, at the 6-month mark of his mission. He has been sharing the gospel with many wonderful people and is getting a lot of help and support from the local church members. He works really hard but feels very blessed and has had many spiritual experiences.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6859041374009993077.post-7884788402878565062016-12-12T00:36:00.002-08:002016-12-12T01:07:39.064-08:00New CompanionAdam has a new companion after working with Elder Collett for 12 weeks. He and Elder Collett were caught in it briefly and had to run after several important documents that were blown away from an open backpack. Luckily, they retrieved the documents and no one was hurt. Adam continues to do well. He shared his testimony at church in Mandarin, in front of native Mandarin speakers. He is teaching an English class and is also teaching several people interested in learning about the gospel.
He spiked a fever a few days ago but recovered quickly after getting some needed rest. He helped complete the teaching of a mother and two daughters and, on Saturday, he performed his first baptism in Taiwan, saying the baptismal prayer in Mandarin.
He cooks his own breakfasts (eggs, toast, pancakes) but eats out the rest of the meals because it is cheaper. They eat at home on Sundays and that's when they cook lunch and dinner.
He is very comfortable talking to people on the street and in their homes. Here are some of the latest photos.
He missed the super typhoon Meranti that came close to the southern end of Taiwan Wednesday and the second typhoon, Malakis, that came close to the northern end of Taiwan Saturday morning.
On Friday, Adam took the train to his first area, Kaohsiung (Gaoxiong), the major city on the west coast in southern part of Taiwan. He found out that his friend, Vincent Lin, lived in that apartment when he was a missionary there several years ago.
Adam is serving in the Shihchung Ward in the Kaohsiung Taiwan West Stake. "Shihchung" means the middle of the city so he is working in the main part of the city. The members in the ward are super nice and Adam is glad to be in a welcoming environment. His trainer is Elder Collett from Sandy, UT. He is adapting well and is happy to serve in Taiwan.
In his usual self, Adam spotted a cute baby in a stroller and he made eye-contact and a funny face to him. That got the attention of the parents, Amy and Thomas, who couldn't believe that it was Adam, whom they coached several years ago when he was auditioning for a Gilbert and Sullivan musical camp.
Adam is on his way to San Francisco and then on to Taiwan on the 787 Dreamliner, scheduled to arrive Wednesday evening local time. Since we can't go to the airport during Adam's layover, we are really glad that Adam got to see our great friends from Calgary on his way out. Here are the photos.
He will arrive in Taiwan Wednesday evening to start his work "in the field". We was given the chance to perform his cello solo at the Sunday Devotional in front of 3,000 missionaries at the MTC. He played "Consider the Lilies" with his new accompanist, Sister Coon from Draper, UT. To view a video of their dress rehearsal, go to:

The feature speaker at the Devotional was Chad Lewis, the football player (Philadelphia Eagles) who played for BYU and served a mission of the church. Adam's Mandarin is getting pretty good. The challenge will be understanding people speaking at normal speed and sometimes with accents and slangs.

He's had an amazing experience at the MTC and has grown spiritually and in maturity. He is excited to start his work in the Taiwan Taichung Mission next week.

Adam wants to thank Yulia and her dad (who visited Provo all the way from Russia) for sending him a care package of pistachio nuts, brie, sourdough bread.
His group will be leaving the MTC on Wed, Sep 14, assuming that the visas came through on time. He is getting more comfortable speaking in Mandarin. Once or twice a week, he gets to interact with "live" native speakers either in person or by Skype (with people in Taiwan). He sent home a voice recording of him recounting the Joseph Smith First Vision in Mandarin. It's with some accent but understandable. Amazing how much he learned in just 7 weeks.
His accompanist, Sister Cook, left for Cambodia before they had a chance to perform the cello piece so now Adam has a new accompanist, Sister Coon, who will be serving in Korea. There is a good chance that Adam gets to play for the 3000 missionaries at a devotional before he leaves for Taiwan.
He has had numerous spiritual experiences and his Mandarin is getting more fluent. He spends most of his day speaking nothing but Mandarin. Even on Sundays, the church services he attends are all in Mandarin. He is able to teach short lessons in Mandarin to native speakers and he can pray in Chinese.
He has been asked to play cello at church services this Sunday so he is looking for an appropriate piece and an accompanist. He will also find out when he will be playing for the entire MTC later this week.
He and his zone (6 districts, all Mandarin speaking) go to the Provo Temple every Wednesday. So he just went for the 4th time this week. They also do "temple walks" on Sundays and the photos taken during the walk last Sunday are found below.
With the transfer, he gets a new companion, Elder Barlow from Salt Lake City who will be heading to Singapore Mission's Mandarin Program. His mailing address now has a new Unit number - 170. While all 7 missionaries in District C are going to the Taiwan Taichung Mission, the missionaries in District F will be heading to various missions with Mandarin Programs. Together, there are about 80 missionaries going to Mandarin speaking missions at the MTC. One group of Mandarin speaking missionaries arrive every 3 weeks to replace the group that has completed the 9-week training.
Adam is getting a lot of experience teaching real Mandarin speakers so he thinks that he is getting quite a bit better in Mandarin.
Bishop Waddell of the Presiding Bishopric was the devotional speaker last night. He served his mission in Spain and he talked about the difficulties serving in an area where not too many people were receptive to the restored gospel. He learned there that it's not about himself but about Him, Jesus Christ. He told the missionaries to not get discouraged and give up, but to keep trying to serve and reach out.
He is getting used to the routine (up at 6:30 am and in bed by 10:30 pm, exercise, personal study, and attending classes). He spends 6 hours a day in class learning how to teach the gospel and speak Mandarin. His goal is to learn 45 Chinese characters a day (which means that he'll have a vocabulary of >2,500 words after 9 weeks). As the District Leader of his group (7 missionaries all heading to Taichung), he leads district council meetings where they set goals and work towards them as a group.
Adam joined the MTC choir (which has "more than a thousand voices", according to him) and he got to sing with the Nashville Tribute Band (https://www.nashvilletributeband.org/nashville-tribute-band/) last Sunday when they visited the MTC as part of the Pioneer Day celebration (a Utah holiday celebrating the arrival of the Mormon Pioneers in the Salt Lake Valley in 1847). He loves it.
Adam also auditioned and was selected to play "Consider the Lilies" on the cello, accompanied by a talented sister missionary who is going to Cambodia. They happened to be signing up at the same time and decided to collaborate. After just practicing together twice, they impressed the judges during the audition and were asked to perform at one of the upcoming devotionals.
Adam shared the following spiritual thought based on a talk by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, one of the Apostles:
"Paul describes the whole armor of God in Ephesians 6, in which everything is for defense except for the "sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God". Most people stop there but Paul did not finish his discourse. He continued to say, "And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel". As missionaries, one must open his/her mouth boldly because faith works by words spoken (e.g., God said, let there be light; Jesus said, rise, take up thy bed, and walk; etc.)."
As part of his Sundays, he got to teach some Mandarin speaking volunteers as though they were in real teaching situations. He practices "opening his mouth" and is making really good progress.
It is appended below. He also sent home a voice message. In it, he spoke a little bit in Mandarin. It was pretty good. He had trouble uploading photos so we'll have to wait for photo updates.

Dear Everyone,

Today is my first Pday at the MTC. Because we have a big block of personal time, I'm probably going to be using email for about 20 min at a time with a total of an hour, so I'll be emailing throughout the morning.

Wow, the MTC and mission are totally different from anything else I've ever done. It sure is exhausting at times, but it's the best kind of exhausting because of the Spirit that I feel, the knowledge that I'm doing what the Lord wants me to do, and the good people around me!

The first day was super exciting! A really nice host brought me to my room, and I got everything I needed, including my name tag, which says "Elder Kwok" in English and the "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" in Mandarin. Everything in class is in Mandarin, and we have a really nice and encouraging teacher, who's a returned sister missionary from Taipei. I met my companion soon after, Elder Wilde, who's an 18-year-old mountain biker and bike mechanic. He is really nice, thoughtful, and funny with a really good sense of humor!

The next couple days, the Chinese kept on coming and coming, and my brain felt like it was flooded! But we got some really good advice to get a journal just for Chinese words and meanings. With continual effort, I'm starting to grow my vocabulary, especially incorporating the tones.

We have to write talks in Chinese for every Sunday because we don't know whether we'll be speaking until after the sacrament is over. They're supposed to accumulate to a stockpile of talks we'll have ready when we'll be called to speak in Taiwan. Also, on Sunday, we learned that this month for devotionals will be for emeritus seventies and the next will be general authorities, but rarely an apostle. During the devotional that night, we watched Elder Bednar's talk titled "Character of Christ" He taught about the Character of Christ, which is turning outward toward others instead of turning inward to the natural man (which is self-centered and selfish--he referenced the cookie monster who "want cookie now!"). I felt the Spirit so many times answer many of my questions and struggles. When he closed his talk and the lights turned on, everyone suddenly stood, and guess what? Elder Bednar and his wife walked onto the stand!!!!!!.

I felt many of my questions answered by him when he answered other questions. I felt the Spirit and the love of my Savior and Heavenly Father. I'll share one of my answers. I sometimes worry that I'm not doing things correct or perfect or worthy enough for the companionship of the Holy Ghost, but that's because I forgot a simple truth that he told us that Sunday night. He said just be a good boy or girl. As long as we try our best we can have the Holy Ghost. You don't have to be perfect, but good. Also, worrying about how well you're doing is not selfish, but it's self-centered, which is what he talked about with the natural man. Turn outward instead, because the only way you can find who you are is if you forget and lose yourself in your service. Wow, I can't even describe the force that came to me with that, and I definitely know it's true. I dare you to test it out and see if it's not :).

All right, signing off!

His first activity after settling into his room, "... I soon was in class with my lao shi (teacher), who only spoke Mandarin to us. I was pretty good, but I still need practice and wish I had done a little more Pimsleur. Oh well!"

Adam has two companions, Elder Wilde and Elder Chang (see photo in the earlier post).

After meeting with his Branch President, Adam wrote, "President Deng gave me just the advice I needed: Focus first on coming unto Christ and growing my testimony, and then on the language."

As the new missionaries are organized into groups, Adam is made a "district leader", responsible for a group of missionaries going to Taiwan.

He is off to a good start.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6859041374009993077.post-1537393639567698812016-07-17T20:07:00.005-07:002016-07-18T20:11:04.950-07:00First photos at the MTCThanks to Aunt Carole, we got some photos of Adam during his first days at the MTC.
